The Price of Living in Hawaii

Although to many Hawaii is paradise and the location of their dream home, fulfilling that dream often comes with a hefty price. Considering the fact that Hawaii is isolated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, which also happens to be the largest ocean on the planet, and that Hawaii contains limited land, Hawaii is not a self-sustaining island and many of the life’s necessities must be imported. That means that almost all of the products you see in the store will be more expensive than what you would see on the mainland. Also, because land is much more limited in Hawaii, with much of the land in the mountains being undeveloped, the cost of owning land, and even houses is much, much more expensive. The large estate you could afford on the mainland might be reduced to a much smaller two or three bedroom home in Hawaii.
The cost of living in Hawaii ranges from about 30% to even 60% above the national average, with families suffering the most. What makes it even more difficult to afford the cost of living in Hawaii is that Hawaii has a relatively low income. Although the income itself for a resident in Hawaii was slightly higher than the national average, the income was still below the amount required to maintain the same standard of living anywhere else in America. Nevertheless, if you are willing to cut back some expenses so that you can afford living in paradise, you will most likely feel that it is definitely worth it.
